Cruising from Texas

Cruises from Galveston, Texas

Drive to the ship, skip the airfare and wake up in the Caribbean. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC all sail from Galveston.

For Texas families, Galveston is the easiest way to cruise: load up the car, drive to the port and leave the airport lines behind. Here’s what sails from Galveston, where it goes, and when I’ll tell you it’s worth flying instead.

The drive

Boerne and San Antonio to Galveston is roughly a 4-hour drive, depending on traffic and route.

Parking

The Port of Galveston runs its own cruise parking lots with online reservations, and there are private lots and park-and-cruise hotels too.

Where you can go

Mostly the Western Caribbean: Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Harvest Caye and more, depending on the ship.

Documents

Closed-loop cruises: U.S. citizens can generally use a birth certificate plus photo ID (U.S. CBP). A passport is recommended.

When I’ll Tell You to Fly Instead

  • Eastern or Southern Caribbean: islands like St. Maarten, St. Thomas or Aruba are usually reached from Florida or Puerto Rico.
  • Alaska: cruises leave from Seattle, Vancouver or Alaska itself.
  • Europe and the Mediterranean: fly to cities like Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon, or choose a Viking river cruise.
  • Celebrity or Viking: neither currently sails from Galveston.
  • A specific ship: if your heart is set on a ship that isn’t based in Galveston, it’s often worth the flight.

Make It More Than the Cruise

Arriving the day before you sail takes the stress out of embarkation day, and a night or two after a Europe sailing turns a cruise into a bigger trip. I’ll arrange your pre- and post-cruise hotel nights, cruise parking and transfers along with your cruise. Just ask when you request your quote.
