Bucket-List Trips

Mediterranean Romance by Sea & by Land

Greek Isles, Italy, Spain, the French Riviera and Croatia, by cruise ship, by land or both.

Whitewashed villages above a blue sea, long lunches in a seaside piazza, a glass of wine as the sun drops behind the islands. The Mediterranean is one of the most romantic places on earth, and one of my favorite trips to plan for anniversaries and milestone celebrations.

You can stroll Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter and Gaudí’s Park Güell, stand inside the Colosseum in Rome, watch the sunset from Oia on Santorini, wander the walled old town of Dubrovnik in Croatia, and spend a lazy afternoon on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Many trips also add Lisbon, Portugal, just beyond the Strait of Gibraltar on the Atlantic.

Some travelers love seeing a new country almost every day on a cruise; others would rather settle into one or two places and really soak them in. I’ll help you weigh the options, from the right ship and stateroom to hotels, trains and tours, so the trip fits your pace.

Travel insurance: I highly recommend it for every trip, especially big trips paid for well in advance. I’m happy to include a quote so you can choose the coverage that’s right for you.

Plan Your Mediterranean Trip

By Sea, by Land or Both

By Sea: Mediterranean Cruises

One unpack, a new port almost every morning. Lines I book in the Mediterranean include Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Viking and Virgin. Many sailings start or end in cities like Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice or Athens, so it’s easy to add a few nights before or after.

By Land: Cities, Coasts & Islands

Slow down and settle in: a few nights in Barcelona or Lisbon, a villa on the French Riviera, a hotel on a Greek island, or a train trip through Italy from Rome to Florence and Venice. Great for travelers who want more time in each place than a port day allows.

Cruise + Land Combo

Can’t choose? Pair a cruise with a land stay, such as a week of Greek Isles and Croatia at sea and then a few nights on the Amalfi Coast or in Rome. See which cruise line fits you or ask me to map it out.

Best Time to Go

Spring and fall, roughly April to June and September to October, bring pleasant weather and a little more breathing room at the big sights. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, and the best for beach days. Many cruise lines sail the Mediterranean mainly spring through fall.

Who It’s Great For

Anniversaries, honeymoons, vow renewals and milestone birthdays, couples and friends traveling together, food and wine lovers, and history buffs. Multi-generational families do well on a cruise, where everyone can do their own thing by day and meet up for dinner.

Good to Know

Sights like the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and Barcelona’s Sagrada Família often sell timed tickets, so it pays to book ahead. Pack comfortable walking shoes, and check that your passport is valid well beyond your travel dates.
