Hawaii Island (The Big Island)
Best for volcanoes, unique beaches, snorkeling and nature adventures.
Hawaii Island, also called the Big Island, is the largest in the chain and the most varied. You can stand near an active volcano landscape at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, snorkel clear water on the Kona Coast, and see black-sand beaches that look like nowhere else. Honolulu is not here; that’s the capital city on Oahu.
Because the island is huge, we plan driving time honestly and pick a base (or two) that matches what you care about most, volcano days from the Hilo side, or beach and snorkel time around Kona. It’s a fantastic nature-forward trip, alone or paired with a resort island.
