San Francisco Getaways
The Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz and great neighborhoods to explore.
San Francisco packs a lot into a small, hilly city: the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars clanging up the hills, colorful Victorian houses and neighborhoods that each feel different. It’s a wonderful long weekend on its own, or the start of a bigger California trip.
Walk or bike part of the Golden Gate Bridge, ride a cable car (San Francisco runs three cable car lines), and take the ferry to Alcatraz Island, which is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Alcatraz tours often sell out, so I’ll help you plan ahead. You can also see the Painted Ladies from Alamo Square, stroll the Palace of Fine Arts and wander Fisherman’s Wharf.
Where you stay shapes your whole visit, from Union Square to the waterfront. I’ll help you choose the right neighborhood and hotel, and if you’d like to add Napa Valley wine country, about 50 miles north, I’ll fit that in too.
