Italy is the trip so many travelers dream about: standing inside the Colosseum in Rome, watching the sunset over Florence’s Duomo, gliding along Venice’s Grand Canal, and lingering over pasta with a view of the sea. It’s also one of my favorite places to plan for anniversaries, honeymoons and first-timers who want both icons and unhurried meals.
You can keep it classic—Rome, Florence and Venice by train—or add the Amalfi Coast and Positano for cliffside villages and boat days to Capri. A Mediterranean cruise that starts or ends in Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice or elsewhere is a wonderful way to sample Italy and neighboring coasts in one trip.
